Vasectomy is a surgical procedure, a form of male birth control that will cut the supply of sperm to your semen.
This is done by cutting the tube that carries the sperm.

Getting a vasectomy means you will not have a child in the future. Although it can be reversed, vasectomy is
considered a permanent form of male birth control. But keep in mind that vasectomy won’t be able to protect you
from sexually transmitted infections.
This procedure is considered to be 99% effective. It doesn’t affect your sex drive and your ability to have sex. Men
who choose to undergo vasectomy can still have erections and ejaculations, but their semen won’t contain sperm
anymore.
There are two types of vasectomy procedure:
∙Conventional Vasectomy
In a conventional vasectomy, one or two cuts are made in the skin of your scrotum to reach the tubes that carry
sperm out of the testicles. Your doctor will remove a small part of each tube to leave a small gap between the
ends. This way the sperm can no longer reach your semen.
∙No-scalpel vasectomy
The doctor will numb the scrotum with a local anesthetic, and make a tiny puncture in the skin of the scrotum to
reach the tubes. This means that the doctor won’t need to cut the skin of the scrotum with a scalpel.
Before deciding on a vasectomy, your doctor will ask you about your circumstances and may recommend
counseling before you proceed with the procedure. You should only undergo this surgery once you are very
certain that you don’t want to have children in the future. Reversal surgery is more complicated than vasectomy
itself.
If you have chronic testicular pain or disease, you are not a good candidate for vasectomy. For most men,
vasectomy doesn’t have any side effects and serious complications are rare. Side effects after surgery can include:
∙Bleeding or blood clot in your scrotum
∙Blood in your semen
∙Infection of the surgery site
∙Mild pain and discomfort
∙Swelling
There can also be some complications after the surgery, and it can include:
∙Chronic pain
∙Buildup of fluid in your testicles
∙An abnormal cyst that can develop in the upper testicle
∙Inflammation caused by leaking sperm
∙Pregnancy, which could mean the vasectomy failed, which is very rare
Talk to your medical provider or urologist before making the decision to have the vasectomy. Your doctor will
discuss with you all the possible pros and cons of having this procedure.
